License Activation

In this page, we explain the steps required to obtain a free trial license or a commercial license.

We then explain how to install the license.

Free trial license

If you do not own a commercial QTCAD license, and have not used your free trial version yet, you will be able to download a license for the free trial in the “Products” page of the Nanoacademic client portal.

Getting the free trial version

Please click on “Instructions”. The following page will appear:

License validation

You will then be able to select your operating system, and download the appropriate license-generating tool. The next step is to run the executable on the system on which you want to run QTCAD. The executable will display a code on the screen, which will also be saved in a text file called dat.inf. Either copy-paste the content of the file, or upload the file on the page, and click “submit”. You should then see the following page:

You will then be able to download your license: a file named license.lic.

The free trial license will expire after 30 days.

Commercial license

To obtain a commercial QTCAD license, please contact us at

Once your commercial license is acquired, you will receive an email to let you know how to download, activate, and install QTCAD by applying the following steps.

  1. If you have not done so already, please sign up to the Nanoacademic client portal (if possible, with your academic or professional email), or log in.

  2. You will be notified by email when your license is available for generation and download. This step should take less than 24 hours between consecutive open working days or slightly more on weekends until the next open working day, if not please reach out to us.

  3. Go to the “Products” section and click on the QTCAD button corresponding to the purchased tool license.

  4. You should see your license in the section “My Licenses”. From then on, the steps to follow are the same as those given above for the free trial license.

  5. Please click on the RED “Instructions” button and follow the license activation steps. You will have to download an executable file called nano_infogen_OS, run it and upload the output file (dat.inf) or copy and paste the alphanumerical sequence to the portal.

  6. If everything went smoothly, you should now see a GREEN “Download” button in the section “My Licenses”. This will enable you to download a file called license.lic.

  7. The installation procedure for QTCAD can be found in the Installation section of our Documentation portal. If you encounter any issues, please do not hesitate to post questions on the Nanoacademic forum (preferred) or reach out to us directly by email through

Installing the license

We offer two options for detecting your license.

  1. (preferred) place the license.lic at $HOME/.nanoacademic/QTCAD/license.lic for all operating systems. e.g. /home/YOURUSERNAME/.nanoacademic/QTCAD/license.lic for Linux or MacOS and C:/Users/YOURUSERNAME/.nanoacademic/QTCAD/license.lic for Windows.

  2. Set the environment variable QTCAD_LICENSE_PATH=/path/to/your/license.lic before running the QTCAD software.

We are working on improving our licensing error messages. For the moment here is a list of common error codes.

  • 146/406 - License is not found. Did you follow one of the steps above?

  • 20/141/401 - License is expired

  • 58 - Activation limit reached

Please contact us at if you have issues with our licenser.

Thank you very much for choosing Nanoacademic’s software for your projects!
